Although errors in mitosis are very rare, this process can fail, especially during the first cell divisions in the zygote. Mitotic errors can be especially dangerous to the body, because the future offspring of the defective stem cell will maintain the same abnormality.

A chromosome may not separate during the anaphase. This phenomenon is called "nondisjunction". If this happens, one daughter cell will receive two sister chromosomes and the other will be left without either. This results in one cell having three chromosomes encoding the same genetic information (two siblings and a homologous), a condition known as trisomy, and the other cell, which has only one chromosome (the homologous chromosome), will have monosomy. These cells are considered aneuploid, and aneuploidy can cause genetic instability, a common occurrence in cancer.
