what is meiosis ?

Meiosis is the formation of eggs and sperm. In organisms with sexual reproduction, the cells of the body are diploid, that is, they contain two sets of chromosomes (one from each parent).

During meiosis, the members of each homologous pair of chromosomes pair up during prophase, forming bivalents. During this phase, a protein structure called the synaptonemic complex is formed, allowing recombination to take place between the two homologous chromosomes.

Cell process

The preparatory steps leading to meiosis are identical in pattern and name to the interface of the mitotic cycle of the cell. The interface is divided into three phases:


G1 phase: characterized by the increase in cell size due to the accelerated manufacture of organelles, proteins and other cellular matter.
S phase: the genetic material is replicated, that is, the DNA replicates giving rise to two new chains, joined by the centromere. Chromosomes, which until now had only one chromatid, now have two. 98% of the DNA is replicated, the remaining 2% remains unreplicated.
G2 phase: the cell continues to increase its biomass.
